Fearless

2 Timothy 2:1-13 - Springs Lighthouse

H- [X] 2 Timothy 2:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. NASB1996

E- Paul knew he was near death when he wrote this letter to Timothy [2 Timothy 4:6-8], likely within a year. By “every evil deed”, Warren Wiersbe said “Paul’s greatest fear was not of death; it was that he might deny his Lord or do something else that would disgrace God’s name.”

Paul was confident that the Lord would bring him and all other Disciples [A] safely home to heaven to be with Jesus forever. Jesus said, 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?””  These two verses assure Disciples that our spirit will never die even through our bodies will die. Literally the second a Disciples body dies the Disciples spirit is in heaven with Jesus.

Paul said: “For to me, to live is Christ [He is my source of joy, my reason to live] and to die is gain [for I will be with Him in eternity].” [Philippians 1:21 AMP] The first Disciples believed this and those who ran at the arrest of Jesus became fearless in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus. There were 120 praying after the ascension of Jesus awaiting the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost ten days after His ascension the Holy Spirit came with great power and 3,000 were saved that day. By 360 AD 56% of the known world were Disciples. [Acts 1-2]

What if 120 Disciples already filled with the Holy Spirit started praying fearlessly for revival to come in their church and city for the glory of God? I believe there are that many praying at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida. [Z]

A- I want to be one of 120 praying fearlessly for a great revival in my church and city.

R- O God may Your Spirit work in the hearts of the lost in Jacksonville and 1,00o’s be saved.

Inspired

Bible Verses for Kids - Printable Poster - 2 Timothy 3:16

H- X 2 Timothy 3:16-17…1All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for  reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

E- inspired –All scripture from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:1 was written by men inspired by God. Written over 1600 years with 66 books penned by 40 different inspired men. These authors were farmers, peasants, fishermen and even kings from three continents telling one continuous story from the first word in Genesis to the last word in Revelation.

It is profitable for:

Teaching – God’s Spirit desires to take the wholly inspired Holy Word and instruct us, renew our minds, clarify our wrong thinking, replace lies and half-truths with God’s truth, in all of this transforming us more and more into the image of His Son [2 Corinthians 3:18, Romans 8:29].

Reproof – correcting error,

Correction – transforming or re-setting the direction of a Disciples’s Y life,

Training – training the Disciple to live right according to all the scripture.

adequate, equipped – the purpose of the Bible is to reveal the instructions of God that tell how a person can have faith in Jesus [how to have peace with God click here], then be taught to live and be holy [2 Peter 1:3 HCSB, how to have the peace of God click here], and capable of replicating that process in others [Matthew 28:20-21, 2 Timothy 2:2, how to start disciplining others click here]

A- X  As the Holy Spirit teaches me the Bible and I am being conformed to the image of Jesus; may I catch a vision from God as to how I can please Him and keep His commands.

R- O God I come to You as a sinner saved by grace; help me to live by grace as I am guided daily by the Holy Spirit and reject my sinful nature.

Fear

H- 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mindNKJV

E- Disciples YFor God has not given us – the emphasis is on what God has not given us.

us a spirit of fear – by using us Paul was saying God does not give Timothy, Paul nor Disciples today a spirit of fear.  How often we refrain from the right word, or action, because we are so fearful of what others would think, or say, or do! That spirit of fear comes from satan, the world system, and our sinful nature.

It is in the recognition and acknowledgment of our human weakness, that the Spirit can be strong. Fear is not an unusual human emotion, but it should not be one’s controlling mindset, for all Disciples have been given the abundant provision of grace in God’s “power and love and a sound mind.”

power – all believers in Jesus A have the God given ability necessary for meeting difficulties and for the fulfillment of the service committed to us. God never commands us to do what He does not also enable us to perform.

Agape love is produced in the heart of the surrendered Disciple Y by the Holy Spirit and has as its chief ingredient, self-sacrifice for the benefit of the loved – Jesus and others.

Sound mind –  a mind secure and sound but also calm and well-balanced, self-controlled, disciplined, able to stay in control in troubles, success or failure.

John MacArthur records a powerful example of the spirit Paul is writing about in this verse – “During the Boxer Rebellion (1899–1900), extreme nationalist Chinese fomented a campaign of terror against officials of foreign governments, Christian missionaries, and even Chinese Christians. After they surrounded a certain mission station, they sealed all exits except one. They placed a cross in the dirt in front of the opened gate and told the missionaries and students that anyone who walked out and trampled the cross would be spared. According to reports, the first seven students who departed trampled the cross and were sent on their way. The eighth student, a young girl, approached the cross, knelt down, prayed for strength, carefully walked around the cross, and was immediately shot to death. The remaining 92 students, strengthened by that girl’s courageous example, also walked around the cross to their deaths.” T

A- The will of God is for me to live not in fear but the power, love and sound mind from Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Word!

R- O God help me to live totally trusting in Your awesome power.

COVID is Horrendous!!!

H- 2 Timothy 1:7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ESV

E- Lloyd Ogilvie teaches us there are 366 “Fear nots” in the Bible.  One for every day, including leap year! Source We need these promises of God in this time of the COVID pandemic. There is more fear today in the US than at any time in my memory since polio and the 1960’s.

Let’s consider the facts by looking at the top 11 causes of death in the US including COVID.   From the table below [B] COVID is 3rd in the list after #1 heart disease and #2 cancer.. I know that most of us have a family member or close friend that has died or suffered from heart disease, cancer, or COVID. I personally have had a heart problem since 1995 and had a very severe case of COVID starting in January 2021.

COVID jumped from zero deaths to 3rd on the list because 1.5 years of 2020-2021 COVID deaths are annualized at 400,000 per year. That is an horrendous jump. The median age of deaths is at 75+ as estimated from the chart below for the US . Over 50% of the deaths were at 75+ and 95% of deaths at 49+. This leaves age 0 to 49 at about 5%. The 75+ age group, a very volnerable segment of the population was involved and in many states they did not do a good job protecting the elderly.

  • The chart above is for 507,485 US deaths out of 614,291 through 8/8/2021. source
  • The chart below is by age for weekly deaths per 100,000 population from 3/1/2020 to 8/14/2021 for the US. The top line is for 75+ again demonstrating the volnerablty of 75+. The 2nd line is for 65-74 years. This vividly shows the wide range between the 75+ and 65-74 age ranges. source

As of 8/11/2021 there is a new peak coming as indicated by new cases and hospital admissions in the US. My state Florida and county Duval are going to peak again soon as indicated by new cases and hospital admissions.

There will be peaks and valleys for hospitals and other healthcare providers, but this a problem to be managed with surge capacity. As the population ages there will be hundreds of thousands of shortages of healthcare doctors, nurses, other caregivers and equipment. COVID has advanced the time these shortages will need to be managed. This may be a troubling, hard, costly, and long process!

Florida August 13, 2021

COVID may settle in and have peaks that will be only partially controlled by vaccines like the flu

What are we to do with this possibly long term horrendous monster? Some suggestions:

  1. Claim God’s promise to give us His power and love instead of fear [2 Timothy 1:7].
  2. Take everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving without anxiety [Philippians 4:6-8].
  3. Demonstrate the self-control that God promises instead of fear… some Bible Versions use self-discipline, sound judgment or sound mind... [2 Timothy 1:7]. This will include being led by the Holy Spirit as we carefully consider descisions like vaccinations, masking, where we go, impact on others, etc while taking into account our age, health risk factors, the current risk levels, job requirements, etc.
  4. Consider 5 Reasons Christianity increased to 56% of world population by 350 AD. Disciples [A] today can select which of these reasons to focus on to help and encourage others. As you will find out when you read this, our situation today is vastly better than in these 3.5 centuries.

A- What can I do to help reveal the love of Jesus and His glory to people I know and come into contact with?

R- O God help me to exhibit the “power and love and self-control” that You give me instead of fear.

I would invite your thoughts and corrections.

The command from Jesus is to be a Disciple-Maker.

H- X  2 Timothy 2:2  The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

E- I have found that many young men are hungry to learn how to become a disciple-maker [A] and am thankful they are willing to come to my house to meet with me. Also, some men I meet with by telephone, especially during the coronavirus scare.

Paul told us all church members are to be disciple-makers. He is following up on the commands from Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, and other scripture.

I believe you will be blessed to participate in One2Won Discipleship training for men, women, and Hispanics. You will be a part of obeying the command that Paul, inspired by God, wrote in 2 Timothy 2:2 above.  I thought for many years that the pastor and teachers were responsible for discipling men and women but that is not true according to this verse.

The only hope for the church is a revival in the USA. Discipleship Training must be a major part of the revival. It is biblical!

A- X I need to be diligent in obeying the commands to go be a disciple-maker.

R- O God Please help me to be faithful to keep Your commands.

The problem solving cycle

The Problem Solving Cycle below has been proven in my life for over 50 years. It can be used in a moment when you are mistreated by someone and have to decide how to respond. It is also effective for problems that require data collection and analysis before proceeding. No problem is too small or too large for this process.

9-step-model-process-ppt

1. Use the Sound Mind Principle promised by God. Ask how can God’s glory be revealed through this problem and for me to grow in the image of Jesus? (a)

2. Claim the Word of God, the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ for guidance. (b) Ask for Wisdom from God &  Attributes of Wisdom from God

3. Replace anger and fear with faith by thanking God no matter the circumstances:
When a problem causes anger and fear and we lash out at the perceived problem a “New Problem” is created. We must then fix the 2nd problem before addressing the 1st problem. The answer so we can stay focused on the real problem is to be thankful and receive the peace of God. (c)

4. Recognize the difference between fact and problem: A fact cannot be changed except by miraculous intervention by God. He will give you the grace to accept it or supernaturally change it. (d) Whereas, God can give you His wisdom, courage, and knowledge to solve problems.

5. Define the problem: This is sometimes the most difficult step because symptoms obscure the real problem. Be sure you have the problem defined before leaving this step. Involve all the people in this process who must be involved in implementing the solution.

6. Develop alternative solutions to the problem: Don’t be frozen by fear and lack of data.

7. Select the best solution: Don’t put off this step waiting to get one more piece of data. In today’s fast-paced world unless your problem involves spending vast amounts of money or an event that cannot be easily revised in progress, it usually best to make a decision with the information available.

8. Go to work on that solution: This is the second hardest part of solving problems. It requires discipline, perseverance, resilience, and intense focus. Never, never give up. (e)

9. Go back to Step 1 and repeat the cycle at regular intervals or when something is off trackReview progress; Revise action steps if appropriate, and Refocus energy.

Monday Verse to Memorize for the week #10 of 100:

Listening: The Word of God and Prayer

10. 2 Timothy 3:16-1716 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; NASB

Getting Scripture into the Imagination:

“Scripture memory allows us to practice spiritual thought. Jesus said, you shall love the Lord our God with all your hearts, souls, mind, and strength.” [Mark 12:30 NASB] Our minds will always be full of something – temporal or eternal. Scripture said:

“Be renewed in the spirit of your mind[Ephesians 4:23 NKJV]
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” [Isaiah 26:3 NKJV]
• “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” [Philippians 2:5 NKJV]
• “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” [Colossians 3:2 NKJV]
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace [Romans 8:5-6 NKJV]
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” [2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV]
“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” [1 Peter 1:13 NKJV]                                  • “
be transformed by the renewing of your mind” [Romans 12:2b NASB]

The simplest way of implementing these precepts is by printing God’s Word on our minds.  The hand of Jesus can write a positive, hope-filled message of life on the walls of our intellects whenever we learn the Scriptures by heart.

Scripture memory enables us to maintain our mental equilibrium and spiritual vitality. We can see the Scripture in our minds, picturing its scenes, hearing its words as if spoken just to us, rolling them over in our minds like rocks in a tumbler.

The power of Scripture is unlike anything else on earth. It’s a force to be reckoned with, containing the power of Jesus, high enough to give us insight, deep enough to give us peace, wide enough to mold our personalities, and strong enough to bear us through horrendous days.”  T
