Summary/application: 1 Corinthians 13:

1. Believers are to be motivated by agape love when serving others.

2. Love describes the only right relationship we can ever have with God and others.

3. Jesus loves believers with agape love. Do I love anyone with agape love? Do I desire for my love to be agape?

4. Agape love for Jesus is necessary to obey the New Testament commandments.

5. Today’s reality, I am in the presence of Jesus and someday I will pass from this life into heaven and be in the presence of Jesus forever, my hope for the future!

6. God’s mercies are new every morning!

7.  memory verse – 1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love. Luke 13:3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. [oves]

The New Worldview! The world we live in.

“In the beginning, God.  God spoke. But that was a long time ago.

We wanted certainty—now.
For this, only Reason and Rationalism AA would do.
But that was not enough. We wanted to “test.”
So we went into the senses and found the empirical.
But that’s not what we meant by testing. We really meant the “feeling.”
So we found a way to generate feeling into the picture.
Truth was framed into a scene.
But the scene was left open to interpretation. Scenes are not absolute.
So the story was told as an art form.
But the reader still didn’t like it, because he was not the author.
So he read the story to make of the story whatever he wished.
But what does one do with the long reach of the empirical?
The best way was to find a blend between the empirical and the satirical and end up with God again.
The only difference was that God could not be the storyteller.
We still needed God.
So we became God.” A

There are no absolutes or boundaries in the “Sociological” worldview. Most people we meet have not thought this deeply or consciously believe like this. However they live like this because of the influence of the majority of the media, news, entertainment, and academic providers of information and education.

What is your Worldview? Is it Sociological or Biblical B? It determines the choices you make on a daily basis.

Notes: AA- Reason– The power of intelligent and dispassionate-[impartial and calm]       thought, or of conduct influenced by such thought.                                                           Rationalism– The principle or habit of accepting reason as the supreme authority in      matters of opinion, belief, or conduct.                                                                               Empirical- Depending upon experience or observation alone.                                                 Satire- The use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule or the like in exposing, denouncing, or      deriding vice, folly, etc.

Four direct appearances by Jesus to Paul from 34-59AD

      1. 34 AD- On Damascus Road Paul was met by Jesus and 3 days later saved – Acts 9:3-17

Paul spent 3 years in Arabia studying the Old Testament and being instructed by the Holy Spirit before meeting with Peter and James in Jerusalem in 37 AD. AA

  1. 37 AD – In Jerusalem – Acts 22:17-21, 18 and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’ 21 And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’
  2. 51 AD – In Corinth – Acts 18:9-10 And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent;10 for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.”
  3. 59 AD – In Jerusalem – Acts 23:11 But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.”

These direct appearances of Jesus were important for Paul. By 59 AD only 7 books of the New Testament had been written, six by Paul and the book of James. The early Disciples had access to the Old Testament scrolls, but they were limited in number. Jesus said the Holy Spirit “will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. A

Paul was in Jerusalem in 59 AD and what Jesus said confirmed that he was right to come Jerusalem from the 3rd missionary journey even though persecution was the immediate result. Jesus said “take courage…you must witness at Rome also” [v.11c above]. What a comfort to Paul.

Today’s disciples have the entire Word of God C in immense quantities along with commentaries available in print and on the internet, the Holy Spirit D and the mind of Jesus. E

Are you comforted – no matter what your circumstances are – by the continual presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit in you and the Word for daily spiritual growth.

Man of Prayer

Man of Prayer
Man of Prayer  June 18, 2017

In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. Psalm 109:4

A man of prayer prays. It is his first line of defense and his most effective offensive strategy. Prayer is not an afterthought for a man of prayer; it is not a last ditch engagement with the eternal but is the first thing to come to mind. Prayer is not just a demonstration of discipline and determination, but a desperate dependence on God. It is conversing with Christ,  not just asking God for goodies and guarantees. The man of prayer enters into intimacy with the Almighty. He realizes that God is in control and His wisdom is needed for life and work. Prayer precludes pain by providing patience. It forecasts disaster by giving warning. It discerns clumsy and destructive decisions by cultivating understanding and discernment.

A man of prayer avoids self-inflicted problems because he prays first. Prayer is medicine for the sick and refreshment for the soul. Prayer may be the best gift you can give someone. You may not have silver and gold to give, but you can give prayer (Acts 3:6). A man of prayer does not talk about praying, with a simple, “I’ll pray for you.” On the contrary, with a seriousness of purpose and responsibility, he stops what he is doing and lifts to heaven the concerns of the one requesting prayer. As you hear him pray, a peace and calm overcome you. It is encouragement from on high. His is not a stale prayer but fresh, because the man of prayer has been in prayer. A man of prayer prays for his spouse and for the spouses of his children. He leads his wife in prayer. He keep s his logical mind in check by checking in with Christ.

Start by getting on your knees for five minutes each morning. Prayerful posture is important to a man of prayer. His stature is humble and dependent. Therefore, humble yourself daily before your heavenly Father. Lay face down on the floor, if necessary. Then get up and consider making a prayer list. However, do not sell yourself short by feeling unqualified to be a man of prayer. This role is not reserved for the super righteous. It is for adulterers, liars, and murderers like David (Psalm 51). A man of prayer is still a man in recovery from sin. Sin does not cease to hound the man who prays, but it drives him to pray; then sin’s influence is stunted in the face of the man of prayer. It is hard to sin while you pray. There is accountability to God that bolsters the man of prayer in his everyday life.

Indeed, there is a direct correlation between prayer and purposeful living. “Man of Prayer” is not a title that comes with a badge to flaunt. Instead, it is a discreet lifestyle of continual prayer. It becomes a habit of life, like eating and sleeping. Prayer, for a man of prayer, is not an elective. It is a required course. It is core curriculum. Moreover, the man of prayer cannot be pigeonholed as to his behavior and speech. He comes in all shapes and sizes, depending on his God-given temperament. He is humorous and humble; He is loud and he is quiet; He is spontaneous and he is methodical; He is creative and he is concrete; He is eloquent and he is simple. However, there is one thing he is not: He is neither proud nor arrogant. People are his pleasure and heaven is his home, where he checks in often. Jesus is his “go-to man.” Worship, thanksgiving, praise, and adoration permeate the prayers o f a man of prayer. A man of prayer prays.

“Pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I humbly submit to You and seek Your face for wisdom to be a dad who loves my children in a way that makes them feel loved well, in Jesus’ name, amen.

From Franklin Graham: The Most Important Election of Our Lifetime #239

From Franklin Graham

In just 10 weeks, our nation will select a man or woman who will become the 45th president of the United States of America. Whomever we elect will take the helm of a nation that has grown increasingly hostile and intolerant of the very foundation and principles upon which it was so nobly founded—the Christian faith and Biblical values.

That’s why I believe this election is the most significant since Abraham Lincoln was chosen to guide a divided country through a bloody and protracted civil war.

For if the forces of evil that are allied against the free exercise of our faith succeed—and they have done severe damage already—then I have no doubt that the nation we love will devolve into moral anarchy more quickly than we can imagine.

God describes His covenant with Israel in terms of peace.

This is 4th in a series on “peace” from the bible.

God describes His covenant with Israel in terms of peace. From 70 AD to May 1948 the people of Israel were without a country and persecuted horribly. However they are back in the nation of Israel now and probably more safe now than since the time of King Solomon. The promise of peace is still effective and total peace will arrive someday. The Bible says:

“Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give him My covenant of peace;” ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭25:12‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“”For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, And My covenant of peace will not be shaken,” Says the LORD who has compassion on you.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭54:10‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“”I will make a covenant of peace with them…” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭34:25‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“They will live on the land that I gave to Jacob My servant, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they, and their sons and their sons’ sons, forever; and David My servant will be their prince forever. I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭37:25-26‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“”My covenant with him (Levi) was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and stood in awe of My name.” ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2:5‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Seek and pursue peace!

Third in a series on peace from God’s word.

God repeatedly commands His people to seek and pursue peace.

“Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.” Psalms‬ ‭34:14‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬
“So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:19‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭7:15‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭13:11‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:15‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.” ‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:13‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Pursue peace with all men,…” Hebrews‬ ‭12:14
God promises to bless those who seek and pursue peace.

“Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright; For the man of peace will have a posterity.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭37:37‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, But counselors of peace have joy.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭12:20‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9 NASB
“And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” ‭‭James‬ ‭3:18‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Peace is a great blessing from God

Second in series on peace:
Peace is one of the great blessings that God gives to His disciples.

“I shall also grant peace in the land, so that you may lie down with no one making you tremble…”‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭26:6‬ ‭NASB

“The LORD bless you, and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’” ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭6:24-26‬ ‭NASB‬‬

““So may all your enemies perish, Lord! But may all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.” Then the land had peace forty years.” Judges‬ ‭5:31‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“Those who love Your law have great peace, And nothing causes them to stumble.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:165‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:7‬ ‭NASB‬‬

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:” Isaiah‬ ‭26:3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭NASB‬

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭NASB‬‬
