Apollos received instruction from Priscilla and Aquila about the gospel

Acts 18:23-26..

Paul left Antioch and continued through Galatia and Phrygia strengthening and encouraging the disciples. Paul was constantly practicing the 3rd part of the great commission teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” [Acts 18:23, Matthew 28:18-20]

Apollos a Jew from Alexandria, Egypt an eloquent man competent in the scriptures arrived in Ephesus about 51 AD. We are told 4 things about Apollos; 1] he had been instructed about Jesus, 2] he was fervent in spirit, 3] he was teaching accurately about Jesus, 4] but he only knew John’s baptism. Somehow he had believed in Jesus and then departed from the area about 29 AD before Jesus was crucified, buried, resurrected, ascended into heaven and the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost in 30 AD. [Acts 18:24-26]

Apollos ” 26 began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”

When Priscilla and Aquila found that Apollos’s knowledge of the gospel was incomplete they privately explained the gospel to him more fully. They filled in the part that Apollos was missing.

They did the same thing Paul did by practicing teaching the gospel. They used the most effective method of teaching–a small group–in this situation 3 people. We must not ignore any of the three discipling steps.

*Discipling is a three step process in Matthew 28:18-20: recognizing the authority of Jesus 1] make disciples–leading people to be new believers in Jesus D, 2] then encouraging them to be baptized E and 3] teaching them the commands of Jesus F.

In 51 AD Paul departed Athens and went to Corinth on a missionary journey.

Acts 18:9-11..Then the Lord said to Paul in a night vision, Don’t be afraid, but keep on speaking and don’t be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.” 11 And he stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

It was only a 50 mile journey southeast from Athens to Corinth. When he arrived he worked as a tentmaker with Aquila and Priscilla. On the Sabbath he testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. When they opposed and blasphemed Paul turned to the Gentiles. [Acts 18:1-6]

Paul went into the house of Titus who worshipped God. The house was next to the synagogue. Crispus the chief ruler of the synagogue believed on Jesus and many of the Corinthians believed. [Acts18:7-8]

Paul must have been fearful for his safety, because Jesus came to him in a vision and said to him the words in vv.9-11 above. Jesus said 5 things: 1] Do not be afraid, 2] keep on proclaiming the gospel, 3] do not be silent about the gospel, 4] no one will harm you and 5] I have many people in the city.  That must have been very comforting to Paul given his history of persecution. He was filled with joy that he was not alone and could preach with vigor. Paul stayed there 18 months teaching the word.

Finally the Jews rose up against Paul and brought him before Gallio, but Gallio released Paul. Paul left and went to Ephesus. He continued on his trip to Jerusalem, stopping at Antioch. [Acts 18:12-22]

Disciples in Jacksonville, Florida can apply all these statements but #4 to our ministry. Even when persecution comes Jesus will be with us.

“Counseling Victims of sexual violence” my notes of 1/26/2018 sermon at FBCJAXPC By Dr Heath Lambert

  1. Unintended Victims 1 Peter 2:19-23.. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.

Christ Is Our Example

21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;

2.      Intended Victims 1 Peter 2:11-12..11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. 12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.

  1. Eventual Victims 1 Peter 1:17-21.. 17 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
  2. Ignored Victims 1 Peter 3:8-12.. 8-12 Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing. “Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, Here’s what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; Snub evil and cultivate good;  run after peace for all you’re worth. God looks on all this with approval, listening and responding well to what he’s asked; But he turns his back on those who do evil things.”
  3. Subtle Victims 1 Peter 5:6-7.. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
  4. Eternal Victims 1 Peter 4:3-5..For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

Craftsmanship!

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  [Ephesians 2:10]

“The winter of 1494 was memorable for its bitter cold. The city of Florence, Italy, was blanketed in snow, and Michelangelo Buonarroti’s heart was as heavy as the gray clouds that dipped low and blocked out the sun.

The Grand Duke of Florence, Lorenzo de’ Medici, had been the young artist’s benefactor. It was this great supporter of the arts who had given Michelangelo the numerous slabs of marble he needed to refine his incredible talents. [But before Michelangelo was able to create his masterpieces, the old duke died, and his son, Piero, had no use for a sculptor on the payroll. So the great artist’s talents were put on the shelf, and Michelangelo sat and waited.] That is, until a few days before a great party at the new duke’s palace.

In what looked like an incredible answer to his prayers, Michelangelo was summoned before Piero. He’d never been to the palace, even when the grand duke had been alive, and he hurried down the streets, past the guards, and in to see Duke Piero.

While he was afraid to believe it, the rumor circulated by the servant who came to fetch Michelangelo was that he was being commissioned to carve a great statue! At last!

When Michelangelo arrived at the palace, he was ushered into a large room where not only Duke Piero de’ Medici but also a crowd of the duke’s friends awaited his arrival. He was indeed told that his services as a sculptor were needed by his new patron. All he had to do was to go down to the garden, and he’d find all the white marble he needed to make a masterpiece for the duke’s party.

Can you guess by now what the duke was actually asking Michelangelo to do? All the white marble in the garden was… snow. Perhaps the greatest sculptor of all time had been brought to the palace to create a snow sculpture for a royal dinner party!

Just imagine for a moment what was going through Michelangelo’s mind as he walked from the room and down to the garden. If it had been me, I’d have been furious. What an embarrassment! What a colossal waste of time –to put all that effort into something that would melt as soon as the sun broke through the clouds!

`Michelangelo could have stormed out or at least left the duke’s presence with an angry, unwilling heart. Instead, he simply went to work. Hour after hour he gathered snow and packed it tightly into a great mound. Then, at last, he began to carve.

Working from the top down a head appeared, and then shoulders, limbs, torso, and legs. A figure was emerging from the white snow that would be viewed as a joke by Duke Piero and his guests, and then melt away in no time.

Yet still, Michelangelo worked. That’s because he had decided in his heart that even if all he could do was make Florence a more beautiful place for a few hours –he would put all his heart into carving that block of snow. And then it came time for Piero’s party.

The guests arrived. The snow carving finally was unveiled… and instead of laughter came breathless silence. The duke and his guests were staring in awe and amazement at the figure in the snow that seemed able to breathe and walk and even sling a rock at a giant.

The Duke was silenced by the tireless efforts of the young artist who had created a masterpiece of the Biblical David made of snow.

Then, amazingly, that statue turned to marble. Not that hour, of course, for it wasn’t magic. But in the years that followed, Michelangelo’s David was replicated in marble –given to him by none other than Duke Piero himself. This priceless work has drawn millions of people to Florence since it was unveiled –all because Michelangelo was willing to carve something of beauty out of snow….” A

Several years ago I read an interesting biography about Michelangelo. He got his start in Florence. Later in Rome [1496-1564 AD], he lived in a tough time when the hierarchy of the church was corrupt and these men told him what to do.

Michelangelo approached sculpting with the humble conviction that a unique and beautiful piece of art already existed within the stone or snow, and his work was only to release it.

Every Human Life Valued by God From Conception

Psalm 139:13-16.. 13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.

God not only knows our thoughts and intentions [vv. 1-6] and is present everywhere with us [vv. 7-12], He is also active in the womb knitting together our inward parts.

The psalmist celebrated the wonder of humanity, emphasizing God’s complete involvement in the creation of every person. God’s intentional design and creation of every person gives every individual worth and value at the moment of conception.

The psalmist was not the only person in Scripture to speak of God’s creative activity in the womb. Job, when discussing his plight with God, declared, “Your hands shaped me and formed me” [Job 10:8]. Job said, “You clothed me with skin and flesh, and wove me together with bones and tendons. You gave me life and faithful love, and your care has guarded my life” [Job 10:11-12]. Jeremiah, one of the great prophets, declared that God both “formed him in the womb and set him apart as a prophet to the nations” [Jeremiah 1:5]. God not only designs each person, He does so with kingdom purpose in mind. What potential kingdom impact has been discarded with the countless abortions of people whom God designed to advance His kingdom?

14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

The Palmist reacted to the marvelous workmanship with thanksgiving and praise to God. Today we know so much more about the marvelous design and complexity of our bodies, systems, DNA, eyes and brains. Our reaction must be praise and thanksgiving.

16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. [NLT]

V16 is a strong affirmation of the sanctity and dignity of the unborn child. God sets a great value on each of us, even in the embryonic stage. God has a purpose for each individual and has established good works for us to accomplish [Ephesians 2:8-10]. But, He also gave all humans a free will to either reject or accept Jesus as Savior and after salvation a free will to desire to do His will in our lives or to follow our own desires and pleasures. We all have to live with the consequences of our decisions.

God’s intentional design of every person gives each individual worth and value at the moment of conception. Are you and I fulfilling the Kingdom purpose God planned for our lives?

The Complaint by Men who devalued the life of a women –

Acts 16:19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities,

The masters reacted violently because of their profit loss. Abortion and pornography are very valuable to providers today. The dollar numbers below do not include the soft porn so prevalent on TV and movies, sex trafficking and abortion services. It is no wonder that the pro-abortion, sex-traffickers and pornography advocates are so protective of their business that devalues human life.

“General pornography stats

  • Every second $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography on the internet or $97 billion per year.
  • 40 million American people regularly visit porn sites [seems low HL]
  • 35% of all internet downloads are related to pornography
  • 25% of all search engine queries are related to pornography, or about 68 million search queries a day
  • One third of porn viewers are women
  • Search engines get 116,000 queries every day related to child pornography
  • 34% of internet users have experienced unwanted exposure to pornographic content through ads, pop up ads, misdirected links or emails
  • 5 billion emails sent or received every day contain porn
  • Every 39 minutes a new pornography video is being created in the United States

Youth pornography stats

  • Teenagers with frequent exposure to sexual content on TV have a substantially greater likelihood of teenage pregnancy; and the likelihood of teen pregnancy was twice as high when the quantity of sexual content exposure within the viewing episodes was high.
  • A significant relationship also exists among teens between frequent pornography use and feelings of loneliness, including major depression.

Family/Marital pornography stats

  • According to National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families, 2010, 47% of families in the United States reported that pornography is a problem in their home.
  • Pornography use increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300%.
  • 40 percent of “sex addicts” lose their spouses, 58 percent suffer considerable financial losses, and about a third lose their jobs.
  • 68% of divorce cases involve one party meeting a new paramour over the internet while 56% involve one party having an “obsessive interest” in pornographic websites.” A

How might someone try to justify the response of the slave-girl owners? How do people use the same justification today for devaluing human life?

21 Days of Prayer for Life: Day 5

What to Pray For Today:

1. PRAY FOR SALVATION. We do not need an excuse for our sin. We need an exchange—Christ’s righteousness for our sinfulness [2 Corinthians 5:21] Pray that people are not deceived by a false gospel. We are sinners, but Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” [Luke 5:32]. James Montgomery Boice puts it well: “The most important thing in life is to know that Jesus is able to save you from sin. The second most important thing is to know that you require it.” Pray that post-abortion men and women see their true need.
2. PRAY FOR PASTORS AND OTHER CLERGY. Too many pastors who say they are pro-life hedge their teaching on abortion because they fear backlash. Pastors should always approach abortion with biblical compassion, but when they are silent, Christians are not equipped to engage the culture with biblical truth. Pray that God would grant the pastors in your community courage to teach the entire counsel of Scripture, including commands against the shedding of innocent blood.
3. PRAY FOR CLARITY.
Pro-lifers must not only contend with the secular culture, we also must contend with the distortion of Scripture. Pray for clearly stated arguments that cannot be easily dismissed by those seeking to distort Scripture and justify sin.

Freedom Gained From Slavery –

Ephesians 4:24 put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

When a person is saved they are truly in the likeness of God and inhabited with the Holy Spirit. The person is free from the penalty of the wrath of God for their sin and free from the power of the dominion of sin.

The USA is currently in period with a wave of men being accused of sexual sins and receiving enormous financial and social penalties. Most have been men with power over women in the work place. This is a high class case of sex trafficking–using power for sex or to share with others for financial rewards. Sex trafficking at all levels is a major problem in the USA, world and Jacksonville. This includes the media that degrade women in their movies, TV, advertisements and the pornography industry. Below is a similar story in Philippi about 49 AD.

Acts 16:16-19..16 It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” 18 She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment.

The slave-girl was used by her owners to sell her powers of predicting the future. She was very profitable. She recognized that Paul was a servant of God who was proclaiming the way of salvation. This continued for many days. Paul became annoyed probably because he did not want the people of Philippi to interpret her announcement based on their religious beliefs. So Paul said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her! And it came out at that very moment”.

She gained her freedom from the evil spirit immediately.

How does the situation that the slave girl faced compare to human trafficking? What can we do to deliver those who have been enslaved by human traffickers?

21 Days of Prayer for Life: Day 4 – A Pro-Life View in Three Easy Steps

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. What to Pray For Today:

  1. PRAY THAT THIS ISSUE IS SIMPLIFIED. Abortion is seen as morally complex, but it’s really not. Is the unborn a member of the human family? Pray that voters, friends, and family members are not distracted by side issues that miss the point entirely.
  2. PRAY FOR COURAGE. We all know how hard it can be to speak about this issue when we have the opportunity. Pray that you and your family, and your pro-life friends would have confidence in the truth and act when called upon to do so.
  3. PRAY FOR ACCESS. Pray that pro-life faculty in secular universities will have academic freedom to present a persuasive pro-life case to the age group most at risk for abortion.

What if you found yourself in a conversation about your prolife views. How should you proceed?

  1. Keep the main issue the main issue: Pro-life advocates contend that abortion intentionally kills an innocent human being. This simplifies the entire controversy to just one question: Is the unborn a member of the human family? If so, killing him or her to benefit others is a serious moral wrong.
  2. Use science: The facts of embryology establish that from the earliest stages of development, the unborn are distinct, living, and whole human beings. True, they have yet to grow and mature, but they are whole human beings nonetheless.
  3. Use Philosophy: There is no morally significant difference between the embryo you once were and the adult you are today that justifies killing you at that earlier stage of development. SLED is a helpful reminder of non-essential differences:

Size: You were smaller as an embryo, but does body size determine value? Of course not!

Level of Development: You were less developed as an embryo, but infants are less developed than teenagers physically and mentally. Do we think they have less value? Of course not!

Environment: Where you are has no bearing on what you are. Does an eight inch journey through the birth canal change the essential value of the unborn? Of course not!

Degree of Dependency: You depended on your mother for survival, but does dependence on another human determine value? Of course not!

Why Pro-life? A Summary of 4 reasons:

“#1: The Bible Affirms Life. Scripture is clear that all humans have value because they are imago dei, or made in the image of God [Genesis 1:26-28; James 3:9; Ephesians 4:24]. In other words, humans are valuable by virtue of who they are, not because of what they can do. Humans have value simply because they are human. Because humans bear the image of God, the shedding of innocent blood is strictly forbidden [Exodus 23:7; Proverbs 6:16-19; Matthew 5:21].

#2: Science Affirms Life. The science of embryology is clear that from the earliest stages of development, the unborn are distinct, living, and whole human beings. True, they have yet to grow and mature, but they are whole human beings nonetheless.

#3: Logic Affirms Life. If humans only have value because of some characteristic they possess in varying degrees, those with more of it have greater rights than those with less. Then human equality is a myth. But, pro-life Christians have a better explanation for human equality. Our value is grounded in our common human nature, not a degreed property like self-awareness that none of us share equally and may come and go in the course of our lifetimes. When did you get that human nature? You got it the moment you began to exist— conception.

#4: Our Founding Documents Affirm Life. Some of our country’s most important documents – like The Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, and Martin Luther King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” – have their roots in the biblical concept of the imago dei. If God doesn’t exist, where do human rights come from? If they come only from the State, the same government that grants rights can take them away. If human rights are to be absolute, they must come from a source higher than the State. That’s what the authors of our founding documents believed: that every human being is “endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.” The first of these rights is the right to life.

Abortion Facts And Statistics:

  • About one in three women will have an abortion by age 45.
  • Nearly two-thirds of women having abortions say they are Christians.
  • Almost half (49 percent) of abortions are among women and teens 24 years old and younger.
  • More than 85 percent of “abortion-minded” women will change their minds about having an abortion if they are allowed to see an ultrasound picture of their babies.
  • About 13 percent of American women are African-American, yet they account for more than 35 percent of all abortions.
  • Less than one in seven Caucasian pregnancies end in abortion, but almost one in two African-American pregnancies end in abortion.
  • Hispanic women account for 21 percent of all abortions.
  • About 85 percent of women who had abortions in the U.S. were unmarried A
