Psalm 8 “The story of David and Goliath. David listened in astonishment to Goliath mock Israel. Since no one else would do so, David decided to fight the giant himself. David was able and down came Goliath. Soon afterward David was appointed court musician and given the task of trying to charm the king out of his dark moods with the music on his harp. It was probably about this time that David wrote this psalm. Psalm 8 is prophetic and anticipates the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of the age.” A
H- Psalm 8:9 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth
E- X
- The Lord’s glory transcends everything: 1 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
- God sent Moses from a little boat in the river to defeat Egypt and Jesus from a manger in Bethlehem: 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.
- God created and sustains the universe: 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained.
- Vv.4-8… 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. [vv. 4-6 are quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8]; vv.4-8 show man’s position among all the creatures before the fall. When Adam and Eve sinned they gave up their dominion over creation for them and all their descendants. However, “Jesus both man and Son of God on earth exercised dominion over the beasts [Mark 1:13], fowl [Luke 22:34,], fish [ Luke 5:4-7, Matthew 17:24-27, John21:1-6]. Today He is on the throne in heaven and all things are “under His feet” [1 Corinthians 15:27, Ephesians 1:22, Hebrews 2:8].” A
- V.5- Hebrews 2:9 refers to man as represented by the Lord Jesus: “What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angel” [quote from v.5]; and because he suffered death for us, He is now “crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.” By faith, Disciples believe in Jesus and, “see Jesus” [Hebrews 2:8-9], crowned in heaven, and that assures Disciples Y that one day we will reign with Him [Revelation 20:1-6].
- V.5 also for now- You have made them [humans] only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. The dominion that God has bestowed on humanity is great glory and honor. A list is given [v.7-8] of the subjected creatures to show that all the dominion lost by sin is restored in Jesus. Humans are to reign over these creatures, and not allow them to reign over us.
A- X I am thankful that God revealed the reign of Jesus in the Old Testament.
R- O God may the Holy Spirit teach me to have faith in God that someday I will reign with Jesus.
