Who and How are we to worship?

H- [X] John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

E- Who are we to worship?  “To say that God is spirit is to say that God the Father is invisibleColossians 1:15 calls God the “invisible God.” First Timothy 1:17 praises God, saying, “To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.” [Z1] Jesus came to earth to reveal the nature and attributes of God.

God is spirit. “He is self-sufficient, infinite, omnipresent, omniscient, omnisapient, and omnipotent. These attributes of God’s strength build upon one another in our lives. God is self-sufficient; He does not need us, but we need Him. God is infinite; the God we need possesses perfection. God is omnipresent; the perfect God we need is always there for us. God is always omniscient; God knows what is wrong and what we need. God is omnisapient; He is wise and understands what to do with that knowledge. God is omnipotent; He is able to bring about what we need.” [Z2] We all need God’s strength every day as we worship our powerful God.

How are we to worship? Disciples [A] must worship God in spirit and truth. There are three important words! 1st must, this is a command. There is no other way to worship God than in spirit and truth. 2nd spirit, the Spirit of God dwells in the  soul of the Disciple. The Spirit desires to guide our lives but is in a daily battle with our sinful nature. The Disciples who humbly submit to God daily will – be filled by the Spirit, receive the fruit of the Spirit and be guided by the Holy Spirit [Z3]. This person is ready to worship in their spirit. 3rd truth, our truth comes from the Bible and guidance by the Spirit that is in harmony with the Bible and the will of God. [Z4]

A- The power of God is revealed to Disciples by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

H- O God help me repent of my sins and my spirit be guided by Your Spirit as I worship You throughout each day.

True Worship.

What Does John 4:23 Mean?

H- [X] John 4:23-24…23 But a time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  NASB

E- Jesus stopped at Sychar in Samaria and talked to the Samaritan women at the well [Z1]. Jesus tells her and us in vv.23-24 above that true worshipers will worship God in spirit and in truth. True worship is God-centered worship by Disciples. Worship can include praying, reading God’s Word with an open heart, singing, and serving others. It is not limited to one thing or one place but is true worship when the heart and attitude of the person are in sync.

Worship is reserved only for God. Only He is worthy and not any of His servants or anyone or anything else [Revelation 19:10] Adultery and Murder. Worshiping for the expectation of something in return, such as miraculous healing, is not true worship. Worship is done for God—because He deserves it—and for His pleasure alone. True worship is an inward action of our heart/soul and then is expressed through the outward actions of our physical body.

True worship is not confined to what we do in church. True worship is the constant acknowledgment of the presence of God and all His power and glory in all we do [1 Corinthians 10:31]. The highest form of praise and worship is continous obedience to Him and His Word [John 14:15 and cross-references]. To do this, we must know the true God and not substitutes as Paul said in Athens [Acts 17:23]. Worship is to glorify and exalt God. We show our loyalty and admiration to our Father, with our spirit and the truth revealed in the Bible. [B]

A- [X] I desire to worship God in spirit and in truth.

R- O God help my spirit be in sync with Your Spirit and to worship You with truth!

But on this trip, Jesus went through Samaria with a stop at Sychar [John 4:1-45]

Jesus shared with a Samaritan woman by asking and answering questions – a model for disciples today

John 4: [CSB]

A woman of Samaria came to draw water.

“Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her,

“How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked him.

10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”

11 “Sir,” said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep.

13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.”

15 “Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

16 “Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”

17 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. 18 “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.”

19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet..”

21 Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, 23 an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.

25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”

28 Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the people,

39 Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of what the woman said when she testified, “He told me everything I ever did.”
