God works everything for good to those who love him.

H- Genesis 50:6 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.

E- After Josephs brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt, Joseph ended up at age 30 as the number 2 person in all of Egypt. He bought grain for storage during 7 years of large harvests then begin to sell it during 7 years of drought. Jacob [Israel] moved the 75 members of his family to Egypt and now Jacob has died. The brothers went to Joseph in fear and promised to be his servants.

But Joseph responded in v.6 that they meant it evil when they sold Joseph into slavery but God in the long term meant for good to preserve many people alive. This was only the beginning of God’s promises to Abraham; that after 430 years over 2.5 million people left Egypt and returned to the promised land. A

The promises that God made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph were ultimately fulfilled by the coming of Jesus to earth to pay the price for my sins. Therefore all Disciples are descendants of Abraham heir according to promise.B

God is eternally good as seen in the New Testament equivalent of Genesis 50:6: And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.C

A- X Praise the Lord that God causes all things to work for good for His children. This was true for Joseph and today.

R- Father God help me to trust that You will work things for good in my life in all circumstances and to be thankful.

Testing your faith

H- X  1 John 1:6  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

E- The Bible encourages us to examine ourselves to see if we are truly “in the faith” [2 Corinthians 13:5]. 1st John was written so we can know for sure that we have eternal life; “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” [1 John 5:13].

There are tests we can use to examine ourselves and our faith. No one will perfectly fulfill all of them all the time, but they should reveal a desire and trend that can be seen in our lives as we grow in grace.

1. Do you enjoy having fellowship with Jesus and His family? [1 John 1:3]
2. Would people say you walk in the light of Jesus, or walk in the darkness of Satan? [1 John 1:6-7
3. Do you admit, confess and repent of your sin or deceive self? [1 John 1:8]                          3/24/2019 Dr HL vv5-10 A-C                                                                                                                  A. are you walking in the light? v.5  the way to know you are in the light is admitting your specific sins!                                                                                                                                  B. Confessing sin is required to walk in the light. v.8,10 spiritual heart transplant soft not hard Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. NLT                    C. Confessing sin is essential to our real personal relationship with a man Jesus Christ. v.9 our part confessing; Gods part forgiveness Titus 2:14 Psalm 51:2 God has already punished Jesus for my sin and He will not punish me a 2nd time. However, our fellowship is broken until we confess and are forgiven.
4. Are you obedient to God’s Word and His New Testament commandments A? [1 John 2:3-5]
5. Does your life indicate you love God rather than the world? [1 John 2:15]
6. Do you practice “doing what is right”? (1 John 2:29)
7. Do you desire and practice maintaining a pure life–thoughts and actions? (1 John 3:3)
8. Do you see a decreasing pattern of sin in your daily life? [1 John 3:5-6]
9. Do you demonstrate love for other Disciples Y? [1 John 3:14]
10. Does your walk agree with your talk? [1 John 3:18-19]

11. Do you have a clear conscience? [1 John 3:21]
12. Do you experience victory as you walk with Jesus? [1 John 5:4] B

Can you answer truthfully “Yes” to these questions; or a majority of them, and are working on the others, then your life is bearing the fruit of true salvation. Jesus said that it is by our fruits that we are known as His Disciples Y [Matthew 7:20)].

A- X I need to constantly persevere and desire for my life to match or exceed my lips.

R- O God I need the help of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God and the mind of Christ to achieve my actions exceeding what I claim with my lips. A

The Gospel is the good news

H- Mark 1:14-15 15a and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;”

E- The book of Mark is about action, using the word “immediately” 40 times. So Mark covered the time from before creation to His temptation in 4 words The time is fulfilled”. T What God had in mind before creation, said to Eve, promised to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David and many other Old Testament prophets, the time had come. The kingdom of God is at hand!  But His kingdom has to do with His reign in the lives of His people; it is a spiritual realm and not a political organization. The only way to enter God’s kingdom is by believing the Good News and being born again  A.

Wiersbe said: “Most of the Jews read “political revolution” into the phrase kingdom of  God. “Gospel of God” because it comes from God. “Gospel of the kingdom” because faith in Jesus brings you into His kingdom. “Gospel of Jesus Christ” because without His life, death, and resurrection, there would be no Good News. “The Gospel of the grace of God” because there can be no salvation apart from grace C.”

1b The gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,… 3b that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.” D

“you stand” in the gospel from salvation until heaven when the Disciple Y is being conformed to the image of Jesus. E

A- I have been saved by grace and now I stand in my life between salvation and heaven being conformed to the image of Jesus, partially on earth and fully in heaven.

Eliminate all hatred

H- 1 John 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

E- H. A. Ironside said “I heard a professed Christian woman speaking of another, and between her clenched teeth, she said, “I wish she were dead.” That is murder!”

When a Disciple lets their sinful nature take over their life this could be the momentary result. The result could also be mistreating someone verbally or otherwise, that would send the same message to the victim. If the Disciple realizes the sin and confesses and repents of the sin God will forgive the person. Unfortunately, there may be long term consequences with the victim of hatred.

No one who willfully goes on in this sin has any business calling himself a child of God. No one who practices hatred has eternal life abiding in him. No murderer possesses eternal life, and hatred is the root of murder. This does not mean that an actual murderer cannot be saved. It does mean that if he is saved, he will no longer live in hatred.

John wrote with a black and white approach with no in between. A person either has eternal life from God through Jesus or they do not. Our actions and words reflect which is true.

A- X I need to be very careful to eliminate any hatred I have in my soul, mind, and heart.

R- Holy Spirit of Jesus please give me the strength and power to eliminate hatred in my life!

Do you have Anxiety?

H- X Psalm 38:18 For I confess my iniquity; I am full of anxiety because of my sin.

E- I am very concerned about some people [including me] who are filled with anxiety. I have been praying that the anxiety will be removed. I studied the verses in the Bible mentioning anxiety and selected these verses for prayer promises. It begins with admitting anxiety is a sin to be confessed and repented.

Psalms 94:19 When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.

Psalms 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts;

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.

Isaiah 35:4 Say to those with anxious heart, “Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, But He will save you.”

Jeremiah 17:8 For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit.

Philippians 4:6-7…Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:6-7…Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

We are told to take everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving and a great peace will guard our hearts and minds in Jesus. We can do this when we humble ourself under God and because God cares for His children.

A- I need to take my anxiety before the throne of God through Jesus my High Priest.

R- Father help me through Your great power to be thankful in everything that I may be anxious about and trust You to protect, comfort and give me peace. I acknowledge this may not fix the problem I am anxious about soon or even for a long time but I can have the peace of God one day at a time.

The power of God for Then – Now – Then!

H- 1 Corinthians 1:30 But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God [revealing His plan of salvation], and righteousness[then – making us acceptable to God], and sanctification [now – making us holy and setting us apart for God], and redemption [then – providing our ransom from the penalty for sin], AMP

E- All who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior are in Christ Jesus eternally. [John 3:16, Romans 8:9-10 HCSB] He is The Disciples Y wisdom. The emphasis here is that God shows His wisdom by the righteousness, sanctification, and redemption we have in Jesus.

These 3 big words have very powerful meanings for the Disciple A.

Righteousness – we have been declared acceptable or righteous before God by the exchange of our sin for the righteousness of God. [2 Corinthians 5:21] This is the greatest exchange any person can ever make; a one-time event at the time a person believes in Jesus. We have been saved from the penalty of sin – righteousness – then on earth.

Sanctification – set apart to belong to God, to conform to the image of Jesus, and to serve Him. Also sometimes called progressive sanctification. We are being saved from the power of sin – sanctification – now on earth.

Redemption – we are set free from the ultimate penalty of sin because of Jesus paying for that sin on the cross. We will be saved from the presence of sin – redemption – then in heaven.

Paul ends with v.31 “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.” We are never to boast of our work but give all the glory to the all-powerful, present, wise, and knowing God – the Creator and Sustainer of this great universe.

A- X  I have great blessings to thank God for: then – now – then!

R – May I surrender to Jesus every day and let the Holy Spirit guide my life instead of my sinful nature in response to the great blessings from Jesus.

What is your measure of success #2?

H- X Romans 8:29  For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined AA  to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; NASB

E- The goal of God is clear for Disciples to be conformed to the image of Jesus. [See #1]

Being conformed is in two parts: [1] After salvation A, God desires that the Disciples goal be “to become conformed to the image of His Son”. When Disciples sin our fellowship with Jesus and spiritual growth are impacted until we confess and ask forgiveness B. [2] All Disciples will ultimately follow Jesus as brothers and sisters in receiving our perfect resurrected bodies at the rapture C & D.

How do Disciples practically move closer to the image of Jesus each day? By claiming His promises including:

[1] Recognizing we have everything we need for daily life and godly living through knowing Jesus from the Bible: 1 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. HCSB

[2] Having the presence of the Spirit of God: 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

[3] Knowing what God has freely given His children: 1 Corinthians 2:12 we have received the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.

[4] “Be filled by the Spirit” with the teaching of the Word; guidance; fruit-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control; strength in weakness; conviction of sin, etc. E

[5] Recognizing Gods commands are not a burden: 1 John 5:3 For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden, CSB

[6] By persevering and desiring to be conformed to the image of Jesus in all areas of life including work, recreation, family, downtime, etc and total surrender to God as a living sacrifice and transformation by His Word! [Romans 12:1-2 HCSB]

Foreknowledge, the predestination of God and your measure of success #1?

H- X Romans 8:29  For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; NASB

E- [See #2] God foreknew – to know beforehand, to foresee. God knew who would voluntarily of their free will humble themselves and accept Jesus as Savior and be saved and also who would not be saved. He wished that none should perish. God not only foreknew who would choose to believe in Jesus but also predestined those Disciples Y to conform to the image of Jesus for eternity.  V

In other words, even though the person has truly been born again supernaturally, they now have an eternal spirit, the person of their free will decides the rate their conformation into the image of Jesus occurs on earth. This is difficult to understand because God is infinite and we humans are finite. Many scriptures describe the free will or choices of humans and the consequences of disobedience for the believer in Jesus B and the person who rejects the free gift from Jesus of salvation. C

Why would the Disciple desire to be conformed to the image of Jesus? Because Jesus first loved us, gave up heaven, became a human being, lived a perfect life, then was crucified for the sins of the whole world that those who believe in Him will be saved and because God commanded it. Jesus said, “If you love me you will keep my commandments”; D and we will obey out of our thankfulness.

The world’s measure of success is focused on attaining wealth, power, fame, etc. Unfortunately, Disciples can be infected with the goals of the world instead of God’s goal.
