7 Church Eras from Revelation 2-3

Revelation is a complicated book with different interpretations. I will not try to defend anyone except I believe the Apostle John was the writer.

BibleProject 2 Videos for Revelation.  [B]

I am finishing my 6 month Bible Reading by reading Revelations one book at a time. on 11/20/20 I read chapter 2.

The seven churches described in Revelation 2-3 are seven literal churches at the time that John the apostle was writing Revelation. Though they were literal churches in that time, there is also spiritual significance for churches and believers today. The first purpose of the letters was to communicate with the literal churches and meet their needs at that time. The second purpose is to reveal seven different types of individuals/churches throughout history and instruct them in God’s truth. Our focus should be on what message God is giving us through the seven churches. The seven churches are:

(1) Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7) – the church that had forsaken its first love (2:4).

(2) Smyrna (Revelation 2:8-11) – the church that would suffer persecution (2:10).

(3) Pergamum (Revelation 2:12-17) – the church that needed to repent (2:16).

(4) Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29) – the church that had a false prophetess (2:20).

(5) Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6) – the church that had fallen asleep (3:2).

(6) Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13) – the church that had endured patiently (3:10).

(7) Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22) – the church with the lukewarm faith (3:16).”  Source

In other words, the Sardis era does not replace the Thyatira Era but coexists with it. The Laodicea Era coexists with the 3 Eras.” Diagram from page 67 of “Exploring the Future” by John Phillips. Believers will receive a new name in heaven

Revelation 2:17 To him who overcomes,…I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’

This verse is in the chorus from “A New Na8me in Glory” by C. Austin Miles “There’s a new name written down in glory, and it’s mine, O yes, it’s mine!” This is exciting because the person who overcomes is he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God” A  All the believers on the day of rapture will receive resurrection bodies like Jesus and be in heaven with Him. Then in heaven believers will be judged for our actions and attitudes. C

I have read many articles about the “white stone” and the “new name”. This is what I believe is a possibility for the explanation. The “white stone” may be symbolic of a ticket to the celebration of the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb”, D  the “millennium” D and the “new heavens and earth” E. The white stone will have God’s special name for me, a name known only to God and me. This will be an intimate name and may reveal the degree of intimacy and obedience that I desired with Jesus while a believer on earth.

Dr. Henry M. Morris said “It would be reasonable to assume, that each new name will reflect the Lord’s evaluation of the character and service of the one who receives it. This will perhaps be how we will be addressed by Him from then on in the new earth. ” F  This new name will be important!

C. S. Lewis said: “Surely each of the redeemed shall forever know and praise some one aspect of the Divine beauty better than any other creature can. Why else were individuals created, but that God, loving all infinitely, should love each differently? And this difference, so far from impairing, floods with meaning the love of all blessed creatures for one another, the communion of the saints. If all experienced God in the same way and returned Him an identical worship, the song of the Church triumphant would have no symphony, it would be like an orchestra in which all the instruments played the same note.” G

What will my new name reflect about my love for Jesus, obedience to God’s commands and my attitude and behavior toward people: of all races–nations, in all economic circumstances, with all degrees of power, who hate and persecute me, who are just different from me in some way, etc?
