God’s Revelation of Himself in Creation!

A. An Unmistakable Witness–Psalm 19:1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

The “glory of God,”  is the infinite power, variety and complexity seen in the stars. Three questions about the vastness of the universe.

1. How Many Stars are there?

“How many stars are there? No man alive can answer it. But the Lord knows exactly how many stars He made on Creation Day Four. And He calls each individually by name. He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. Great is our Lord, and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite. [Psalms 147:4-5]

The galaxies God made in a single day 6,000 years ago range from dwarf galaxies with “only” ten million (10,000,000) stars to giant galaxies with 100 trillion (100,000,000,000,000) stars. Our own Milky Way galaxy contains over 100 billion (100,000,000,000) stars and is about 100,000 light-years across. And there are well over 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

How many stars did God make on Creation Day Four? A 2010 estimate reported 300 sextillion = 3 × 1023 = 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the observable universe. Only God knows how many stars are in the unobservable universe. Even now man cannot count the stars, just as the Bible says.

Scripture says that “star differs from star in glory.” [1 Corinthians 15:41] No two stars are the same; every star and galaxy is different.  The Bible declared the uniqueness of stars centuries before the invention of the telescope made observations possible.

Let’s look at the energy in our star, the sun. “If all the sunlight energy striking the Earth’s surface in Texas alone could be converted to electricity, it would be up to 300 times the total power output of all the power plants in the world!” Source or “In just one second, the Sun produces about 118 times as much energy as the United States used in the year 2003! Only about one-billionth of the total energy that the Sun produces reaches Earth, but it is enough to enable us to live here.” Source

The total energy of all the stars and galaxies is incomprehensible to humans. The power of the Creator is beyond man’s imagination. A Creator whose marvelous works include these stupendous feats of creating, numbering, and naming an unfathomable quantity of gigantic fiery unique stars merits our continual awe, worship, and enthusiastic praise! Yet man daily dares to insult and profane his Maker.” From the Bible Science Guy

2. Who Fine Tuned the Universe so life could exist on earth?

Our earth/solar/moon system is a very strong evidence for fine tuning. Our solar system is embedded at the right position in our galaxy, neither too close, nor too far from the center of the galaxy. The earth is the right distance from the sun and so is the moon from the earth. The size of the moon, and the earth is right.

Our planet has the needed minerals and water. It has the right atmosphere, and a ozone protecting mantle.  The earth magnetic field protects us from the deadly rays of the sun. The velocity of rotation of the earth is just right. And so is the axial tilt of the earth. Beside this, the size of the crust of the earth, and more than 22 different parameters must be just right. To believe, all these are just right by chance, needs a big leap of faith. This is strong support for creation by God who fine tuned the universe so life could exist on earth.  From Fine Tuning the Universe

Four “fundamental forces.”  making life on earth possible–of  22 parameters for those more scientific minded.

  1. Gravitational force constant- large scale attractive force, holds people on earth, and holds planets, stars, and galaxies together.
  2. Electromagnetic force constant- small scale attractive and repulsive force, holds atoms, electrons and atomic nuclei together.
  3. Strong nuclear force constant- small-scale holds nuclei of atoms together which otherwise repulse each other because of the electromagnetic force.
  4. Weak nuclear force constant- governs radioactive decay.

3. How Big is the Universe?

Most people know the universe is “vast,” but until we visualize it, we short change ourselves of some healthy awe. The heavens glorify God, but should also humble us—as should become apparent in the following journey.

On 1/19/2006, the New Horizons spacecraft blasted off on a 9-1/2-year express flight to Pluto.  But Pluto at 3 billion miles is very near compared to the stars. The nearest star is 25 trillion miles away. At the same speed as New Horizon this would require 79,000 years to access by spacecraft. Distance to the nearest star.

Contemplating such things is humbling, but also raises questions. Can a God of such a vast domain really care about us? It’s important to understand the Biblical doctrine of omnipresence in answering this question. Learning that God is everywhere does not mean that part of Him is here, part there, and part in a distant galaxy, as if His love were spread thinly across all of space. No; omnipresence means that all of God is present at every place, at the same time. For more infromation on Knowing God & His Attributes

This means that no matter how large the universe, and how many beings reside within His kingdom, each of His disciples has His full and undivided attention in our own hearts.  “How big is God? He’s big enough to rule His mighty universe, yet small enough to live within my heart.”” ICR How Big is God?

May we worship God the Creator with awe, love, humility and shouts of joy each day and continue until the throne of God where we will be worshipping the Creator in heaven:  “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” [Revelation 4:11 & Psalm 95:1-2]

B. An Untiring but Silent Witness–Psalm 19:2-6.. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. He has placed…the sun, Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

The creation proves there is a God, but it is a silent witness. The heat of the sun and the rainbow are constant reminders, but still silent. To know God and His plan of redemption requires the revelation of Himself through the Holy Scriptures. John Phillips said ” Psalms 19 tells us how God has revealed Himself both in the creation—in worlds, infinite worlds [vv.1-6]—and in the Scriptures—in words, infallible words [vv.7-14]. God has revealed Himself in what He has created and in what He has written.  He is the God of creation and He is the God of revelation.
