THE PASSION–Loving being in the presence of Jesus constantly [Psalm 84:1-4] 1 How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts! 2 My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. 3 The bird [sparrow] also has found a house, And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even [near] Your altars, O Lord of hosts, My King and my God. 4 How blessed [happy] are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You. Selah.
v.1 “How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts!” Lovely indicates the psalmist loved God’s house as God loves His people.
God told Moses “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them. There I will meet with you;” [Exodus 25:8,22]When Moses completed the tabernacle “the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” [Exodus 40:34b]
When Solomon completed the Temple “for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.” [1 Kings 8:11b]
After many years of rebellion and sin by Israel, Ezekiel in Babylon saw a vision of the glory of God departing the temple before the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. “Then the glory of the LORD departed from the threshold of the temple” ” [Ezekiel 10:18a]
However, in Old Testament scripture God is said to be every where simultaneously:
Solomon said at the temple dedication: “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built! [1 Kings 8:27] “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” [Psalm 139:7] About His disciples “He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”” [Hebrews 13:5b]
Even people in hell will be in the presence of Jesus “If anyone worships the beast and his image,… 10 he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.” [Revelation 14:9-10]
After Pentecost each disciple is His temple:
“2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 16… we have the mind of Christ. 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 6: 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” [1 Corinthians 2, 3, 6]
“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; ” [John 17:22]
“Lord of hosts”- a title that expresses divine sovereignty over everything. In His sovereignty He gave humans the freedom to accept or reject Him and His disciples the freedom to “walk with Him daily.”
v.2 “My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.” The psalmist longed and yearned to be in the presence of God. His heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. How much more should we long and yearn to recognize and surrender to the presence of the Holy Spirit of Jesus who lives in us every day so “that we may know the things freely given to us by God. We have the mind of Christ.” Am I filled with joy from the living God?
v.3 “The bird [sparrow] also has found a house, And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even [near] Your altars, O Lord of hosts, My King and my God.”
Apparently the psalmist is referring to the lowly sparrows and swallows who nested the eaves of the temple. He was not so much interested in the type of bird but that they lived near the presence of God. “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” [Matthew 6:26] God is concerned about all parts of His universe including the animals.
v.4 “How blessed [happy] are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You. Selah.”
The psalmist was happy about dwelling in the Lord’s house or His presence and was ever praising God. We can praise God because our bodies are His temple and we are constantly in His presence. We are also in His presence when we come to Church because He is present in all the disciples present. “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” [Matthew 18:20]
Are you happy to be in the presence of Jesus constantly and His corporate presence at church? Do you praise Him every day for His presence and seek His guidance? Do you long and yearn to be in church every service to receive a blessing and be happy? Now as we get older there may be limitations to our coming, but when not present physically, are you present live on the internet at First Baptist Church Jacksonville 3 times a week? Be honest what do you long and yearn for more than the presence of God? What is your passion?
