Why I don’t believe in the “Gap Theory” #118

Charles Darwin published his book On the Origin of Species in 1859. Through the years that prompted many churches and Christian colleges to find a compromise that would accommodate the Bible and Darwin’s theory. One was to accept the “Gap Theory” that there could be billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. C. I. Schofield published his first study bible in 1909 and revised it in 1917. The 1917 edition advocated the “gap theory,” and the church began a serious internal debate about the nature and chronology of creation. (A) By the 1950’s many churches and Christian colleges had accepted this theory.

In 1961 Dr Henry Morris the Dean of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech and John C. Whitcomb published the “Genesis Flood”. This book marked the beginning of a return to a belief in the Biblical record of creation. Dr Morris formed the “Institute of Creation Research” (B) and published the “Defenders Study Bible” (C) to provide creation information and research. My Pastor Dr Mac Brunson is on the board of ICR.

I first read the Schofield notes in the early 1970’s and came to accept the “Gap Theory”. Sometime later in the 1980’s I read the “Genesis Flood” and started reading ICR information and research. I returned to belief in the Biblical account of creation.

Dr Charles Ryrie (D) is the editor of The Ryrie Study Bible by Moody Publishers, containing more than 10,000 of Dr. Ryrie’s explanatory notes. First published in 1978, it has sold more than 2 million copies. (E) A few years ago I ask Dr Ryrie about the “Gap Theory”. He told me he originally accepted it and included it in his notes, however recently he had rejected it and accepted the biblical explanation of Dr Henry Morris.

ICR has many interesting articles on the length of the Genesis “day” and the age of the universe. Here are articles that may provide perspective on the these two questions.
